I just bought a Chinon 2500GL dual-8 projector off eBay. i just sent my money, so I'll probably see it sometime at the end of the month Anyway, this is the one with the variable speed control. Anyone here own one of these and could tell me about the quality? I hear they are supposed to be decent, although my friend keeps advising me that his Chinon scratches his film up. It's a different model, so any advice??

My advice would be just to make sure you clean the projector inside out. Dirt and dust are what really damages your film. Your film has static which collects dust and deposits it right on the film gate of your projector.
But even more important is to lubricate your film. Apparently this is a service that once was standard procedure with processing but is no longer done anymore. In this article below, Martin Baumgarten lectures you on the importance of pre-lubing your film prior to initial projection. He also gives you some tips on how to lube your projector as well.
Good Luck,
